  • Enteral feeding is a very useful method of ensuring adequate intake of fluid and nutrients in patients who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to use the oral route, or are unable to take sufficient nutrients to maintain growth and development.
  • Successful use of the enteral route to supply nutrients is dependent on the child having a functioning gastrointestinal tract.
  • This guideline forms part of a series under ‘Nutrition’ regarding the management of enteral tubes, including placement, access and management. Please also see guidelines and policies for:

Aims of the workshop:
  • To promote a clear, consistent and evidenced based approach to the insertion, care and management of nasogastric tubes
  • To promote the safety and well-being of all patients who require a nasogastric tube
  • To provide guidance regarding scope of professional practice, level of competence and accountability in nasogastric tube insertion, care and management
  • To provide a framework for roles and responsibilities in nasogastric tube insertion and care thereafte
  • To perform safely and competently under clinical supervision and practice independently in their workplaces
Learning Outcomes
  • Identify legal and professional accountability
  • Identify patients who are suitable or unsuitable for NGT placement
  • Recognize complications and gain the ability to effectively manage complications and risk of tube misplacement
  • Demonstrate infection prevention and ANTT in preparation and administration of NGT feeds/medication
